Plycraft eames lounge style chair redo.

Plycraft Eames lounger chair style. This was an interesting project. There are so many different eames style chairs out there. I had never seen this model with the outer shells wrapped in vinyl also. I think it looks great. There is the ottoman as well. Redone in “rave” very leather like vinyl. The base’s spring is totally worn out so when you tipped back you went ass over tea kettle. I took it to my Friend Atom Pechman at form from form. www.formfromform.com He welded a plate on the back of the base to keep the chair from tipping too far back when reclining. Works good now. You can recline but not too far. It also had a missing foot which made it somewhat annoying to sit in. I ended up making a replacement out of a screw, 3 washers and some leather in two diffenet applications. Sits level, ready for use. Thanks Jess

Camera bag”photote” for Ed in Queens N.Y.

This was a fun project for Ed in Forest Hills N.Y. He contacted me wondering if I could make him a something like a photote. A camera bag made in Japan in the 70’s I guess. So we exchanged emails and figured what the colors and specifications would be. I also recommended that he make me a cardboard and masking tape blank shape of his camera. He did and sent it flat with a life size copy and dimensions of the camera. Black leather and forest green 1680 cordura vinyl. Very heavy duty, nice looking, and long lasting material. It is padded with a plate and feet on the bottom. I had to get creative with the snap closure and I like what I came up with.

Thanks Ed. In Forest hills,Queens. New York. I really love the fact that something I made will be cruising around New York helping a photographer practice his interest.

Make your own mid-century modern style ottoman.

Sunday I decided to make an ottoman. I have been looking for a cool one to redo. No luck, so since they are really so simple to construct I grabbed some 2x4s I’ve had hanging around the shop. I cut two lengths at 24″.Two more at 15″. Make a box out of that and you get 18″x24″.  I then glued and screwed that together. Using my L-square and a few furniture clamps.  I then slapped some more wood over the top of the box. Then I used scrap foam from a local upholstery shop that does restaurant booths. I put in hours there so they let me take scraps. I glued 3 ” of foam on top and cut around the edges with my electric turkey cutter. Drilled 4 holes int box for the button strings to pull through. Wrapper dacron fiber over the top of the foam and stapled down the sides.

Using my favorite gold brady bunch fabric I sewed the top cover. Using the “Barcelona tuck” I call it. Similar pleating to a barcelona chair. Then pulled down with buttons. Oh it looks so good. Very “mad men”. Roger Sterling would be proud to kick his feet up on this. Then you sew a band to wrap around the lower body and your done. I bought the legs and plates from Ace hardware. It’s comfy and it was cheap.I bought a whole roll of the vintage upholstery fabric for ten bucks. Free wood and foam.

Two chairs I redid for my own enjoyment.

I bought these chairs from an estate sale a few years ago. They had the original fabric on them that was getting very thin in places. I bought this great vintage gold fabric from a local vintage store for dirt cheap. I still have plenty of this fabric if anyone is interested.
